It’s a common question among leaders who will jokingly ask each other the question above. I don’t think I ever knew, or maybe it just kept changing.
You do NOT have to know what you want to be. Many successful leaders will tell you that they ended or started in a career that was never on their radar. They will tell you of opportunities surprisingly appearing in their lives, stepping into something completely outside their comfort, or going down a path they never imagined.
We do a great disservice to young people by asking them the question of what they want to be. How many of us knew what we wanted when we were young? Today, the average person shifts into multiple careers.
My path has wound through social services, career education, manufacturing, construction, business, retail, and higher education. There are very few fields or arenas that I have not encountered. My primary role has almost always been leadership.
I have described myself as an entrepreneur and innovator, a teacher and practitioner. More importantly, I have discovered the characteristics which have served me well and guided the navigation of my path – a constant desire to learn, a curiosity about anything I discover, and a genuine interest in people.
If you know what those foundational characteristics are for you, you will never have to worry about what you will do when you grow up. Peter Pan didn’t.
