Experiences are what shape who we are. We learn the how and why of doing. We gain perspective, understand people, and broaden our horizons. To my audiences I continually convey a message, fill your life with experiences.
My experiences began early and created a pattern that lasted a lifetime. I grew up in a small town in Southern Illinois. Modest family income, dad worked, mom took care of the house and kids. My parents encouraged me to explore and try new things, go places, and see things. When an opportunity came along, I took it. Here’s a taste of my early years.
Raised money for a Florida trip while president of high school class. Worked every day after school at the Ben Franklin as a stock boy. On weekends, helped at the refreshment stand at the only movie theatre in town.
Walked around a poor neighborhood in New York City, met people at the United Nations, worshiped at an inner-city church, spoke to my U.S. Senator, lived in D.C. for one month, and attended a high school the size of my hometown.
In 1968 rode a school bus through the South headed to New Orleans. What were our adult leaders thinking? Saw the homeless, talked to prison guards, held the hands of a Black Panther Party member, and learned about ladies of the evening (not as a customer).
From a depressed freshman on academic probation to a budget committee appointed by the university president, head usher for concerts in the Fieldhouse (stood next to Stevie Wonder and Elton John). Founded and elected president of an organization with 10,000 members. Organized a conference for Great Lakes universities.
This same pattern continued throughout my life. I don’t remember how it all happened, but when an opportunity arose, I stepped forward. These rich experiences created a solid foundation for me and expanded my worldview. It can do the same for you.
